If you’re dreaming of launching your own floral business, you might be wondering: Should I gain experience and work for someone else first?
There’s no right or wrong answer—only what’s right for YOU. But based on my experience, I didn’t take this route, and here’s why.
Why I Chose to Start My Floral Business Without Having to Work for Someone Else
Many aspiring florists believe they need to work for someone else before starting their own business. But I knew that if I got too comfortable in a secure job, I would be less likely to take the leap into entrepreneurship.
Instead of spending my time building someone else’s dream, I made the bold decision to invest in myself and go all in.
Here’s why I skipped working for others before launching my business:
1️⃣ Comfort Kills Dreams – When we feel secure, we’re less likely to take risks. I knew that if I had a stable paycheck, I might never push myself to build something of my own.
2️⃣ Integrity Matters – I never wanted to hire someone who secretly planned to leave and start their own business using my resources. So I didn’t feel right doing that to another florist.
3️⃣ Success is Built Through Action – Instead of waiting to “learn everything first,” I took a two-week floral course, invested in my business, and started booking clients right away.
4️⃣ You Will Never Feel Ready – If you’re waiting for the perfect time, you’ll always find an excuse. At some point, you have to trust yourself and take the leap. If you’re ready to push away self-doubt and keep moving forward, check out this blog.
Should You Work for Someone Else First?
Here’s the truth: You don’t need to spend years working for another florist to gain experience. What you do need is the courage to start, the willingness to learn, and the commitment to invest in yourself.
If you’re serious about working with hotels and luxury brands, you need to build something that attracts them—and that starts with YOU.
Rather than pouring all your energy into someone else’s business, start pouring into your own. You are capable of creating success on your own terms.
